Micro-Teaching 2 Comments: Please Post Here

  1. Hey Bryan,

I think your lesson for microteaching two was great. It was fun, challenging, and educational; in short, a perfectly constructed lesson.

As with microteaching one, your presence was good. You were dressed professionally and spoke slowly and clearly so everyone could understand you. Your explanation of the assignment was also crystal clear and the help you provided was sparse enough to keep things challenging, but generous enough to be useful.

Your explanation of the main idea was also very clear. By going back and providing examples of the concepts you were teaching that appeared in the assignment, you made it clear as to how the lesson and the assignment were connected.

I think the only suggestion I have would be to maybe have an additional problem or portion of the assignment. It seemed like the other group was considerably ahead of my own, and if you have those kind of disparities in a real class, you may end up with some students who finish long before others. I think having an extra something for those students to do would be a good idea just in case that comes up.

Overall, really great job. Definitely an enjoyable lesson.

  2. Lesson plan

Hey, Bryan! Awesome job on this lesson. You thought of a really great way to teach deductive and inductive reasoning. Your activity was fun, engaging, and a perfect example of the concept. Students will love this lesson. They love figuring things out on their own and being creative. You really have the ideal lesson right here. You helped us reach our conclusions and gave us clues necessary to reach our conclusions. You were dressed professionally and took control of the class. Your timing was great, but I feel like you should have left more time for discussion. All in all, your lesson was not only successful, but it was my favorite. I'm stealing this.

  3. Hi Brian,

I filmed your lesson, so my feedback comes only from the perspective of an observer. I really liked that you were confident enough to essentially give everyone the materials they needed and have them run with it; I think that the lack of introduction/instructions probably made the students more motivated to figure out what they had in front of them. I’m also super impressed that you wrote the deductive reasoning information all yourself! I definitely assumed it had come from the Internet- kudos! I think that your lesson was timed well, too. It would have been interesting to see how it would have went with more than two groups- you probably would not have had everyone come up with the same picture, which would have made for a more lively discussion. That being said, I think that you could easily transfer this lesson to a real, 25 member class. You also did a good job helping/monitoring the groups- not too much involvement and not too little. All in all, great job!

  4. Hey Bryan,
I really enjoyed taking part in your miroteaching 2 lesson. I liked how you were confident in what you were doing and that the assignment gave us room to express the answer our own way. The assignment was timed very well. At first I thought it would be really long and frustrating, but it was far from it. I’m really glad you did this lesson because I can see its purpose in science as well. I plan on using it, or something close to it, in my future classroom because it helps students understand how to think deductively, which is something that I did not learn (or remember learning) in school or college. To conclude, your lesson was very well done, but you could have asked more high level questions as to the process of thinking deductively.

  5. Hey Bryan! I really enjoyed your teaching and (to be completely honest) I'll probably be using your lesson in some way in my future teaching career! I don't remember ever having been taught how to use inductive or deductive reasoning. It was always just assumed that students knew how to reason, which I now see to be a poor assumption. Your material was personalized and easy to use, the use of coloring in groups made the lesson fun, and you interacted enough to keep us on task without making us feel rushed. The only suggestion I would have, would be to have had an example of a final picture that you drew ahead of time that meets all of the requirements of the assignments but is as insane as possible. For example, we talked about how the house needed more than one level, but didn't give an upper limit, and how the handout states one of the people dislikes cats, but doesn't claim the absence of one. After discussing our pictures together, pulling out your picture and asking if your ten story house with a lawn, pointy roof, satellite disk, and a cat out front is correct as well would really pull the lesson to a nice finish. That said, this is just a stylistic suggestion which is the only suggestion I can give because you did such a great job!
